Okay, we know — this one runs long. Like, really long. We sat down with Steve McGrane  @temporarilyoffline  and just… kept talking, because every answer led somewhere worth following. Steve is the creator behind the Temporarily Offline YouTube channel and co-creator of the Toads Digital Interface Board, and he’s built a reputation for making amateur radio feel approachable, practical, and genuinely fun. In this conversation we get into his winding path into the hobby (IT burnout, a small livestock farm, driver instruction, and eventually radio), how he approaches teaching on YouTube, and why he thinks failure is just part of the curriculum — broken gear, botched first contacts, and all. We also talk about what it actually means to welcome someone new into this hobby: rethinking how entry-level licensing could pair rule-memorization with real hands-on practice, why community matters as much as the equipment, and his one piece of advice for a brand-new operator (spoiler: don’t be afraid).
