Amateur radio has always been about more than radios and antennas. At its best, it’s about people—people sharing knowledge, building friendships across distance, and discovering that the airwaves have room for anyone willing to learn. That spirit of openness and stewardship is something the Alliance Amateur Radio Network tries to center in everything we do. So when we recently had the opportunity to sit down with Michael Martens, @KB9VBRAntennas , conversation naturally drifted beyond technical topics and into the culture of the hobby itself—where we’ve been, where we’re going, and how we can make amateur radio a place where everyone feels welcome to key the mic.
Martens is widely known across the amateur radio world as a YouTube educator, antenna designer, and public official. But beneath the technical expertise is something just as important: a strong belief that the amateur radio community works best when it actively chooses respect, curiosity, and inclusion.
