KE9DQS – Beyond the Frequency – Erin Winick Anthony

For the first time on this channel, we’re sitting down with a guest who doesn’t hold an amateur radio license. Erin Winick Anthony is a mechanical engineer, veteran science communicator, and founder of STEAM Power Media. Her resume includes nearly four years as a science communicator for the International Space Station, a stint reporting for MIT Technology Review, five years building and running her own company, and current work as the Zero G Science Correspondent alongside clients like Space Center Houston and the International Ocean Discovery Program. Right now, Erin is serving as Lead Science Communication Fellow aboard the exploration vessel Nautilus, on expedition NA181 — mapping seafloor around Wake Island that has never before been surveyed. We caught up with her mid-expedition, over a satellite link from the middle of the ocean, to talk about life at sea, the craft of science storytelling, and a surprising ham radio connection hiding in the Nautilus crew’s own history. Amateur radio and STEM have always gone hand in hand — most of us got into this hobby because we were curious about how something works, and a lot of the biggest names in science and engineering got their start with a call sign.
